Tonsillitis
What Is Tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Tonsils are part of the body's immune system and help fight infection.
Symptoms of Tonsillitis
Common symptoms of tonsillitis can include:
- Severe sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Painful swallowing
- Red, swollen tonsils
- White patches on the tonsils or throat
- Fever
- Headache
- Stomach pain
- Bad breath
- Swollen glands in the neck
Treatment for Tonsillitis
Viral tonsillitis often clears up on its own within a week without any treatment. If the infection is bacterial, it is usually treated with antibiotics. For severe cases of tonsillitis, a doctor may recommend surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy).
Preventing Tonsillitis
There are a few steps that can help reduce the risk of getting tonsillitis:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially before eating
- Avoid close contact with people who have a cold or other respiratory infection
- Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Don’t share food, drinks, or eating utensils with others
- Practice good dental hygiene by brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once a day
If left untreated, complications of tonsillitis such as swelling of the neck, throat, or airways can occur. Be sure to see a doctor if your symptoms persist.
