Bithiol is also referred to as ammonium bituminosulfonate or ammonium bituminosulphonate. It is an ammonium salt of dark sulfonated shale oil (bituminous schists) produced via distillation of the oil followed by sulfonation and neutralization. It is available in OTC products as an active ingredient for the treatment of skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and boils as it is thought to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antimycotic properties .
