Isoxsuprine

Isoxsuprine is a drug used as a vasodilator in humans and equines. Isoxsuprine is a β₂ adrenoreceptor agonist that causes direct relaxation of uterine and vascular smooth muscle via β₂ receptors. Isoxsuprine relaxes the uterine smooth muscles and is used for treatment of pre-term labor and dysmenorrhea. It is absorbed in the gastrointestinal system and is excreted in urine.

Researchers in this study reported that Isoxsuprine was safe for treating acute pre-term labor and also as a maintenance therapy. Also, it was shown that prophylactic oral Isoxsuprine does not lower the risk of pre-term labor in high-risk, single pregnancies.

Isoxsuprine caused slight maternal hypotension and a transient acidosis, both of which returned to baseline values within 60 minutes.

There are no reports of problems with Isoxsuprine in breastfeeding babies.

The important adverse reactions of Isoxsuprine are tachycardia and orthostatic hypotension, but they occur only at high dosages.
