Metidal-m

Metidal-m Uses, Dosage, Side Effects, Food Interaction and all others data.

A nitrofuran derivative with antiprotozoal and antibacterial activity. Furazolidone binds bacterial DNA which leads to the gradual inhibition of monoamine oxidase. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p514)

Furoxone has a broad antibacterial spectrum covering the majority of gastrointestinal tract pathogens including E. coli, staphylococci, Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus, Aerobacter aerogenes, Vibrio cholerae and Giardia lamblia. Its bactericidal activity is based upon its interference with DNA replication and protein production; this antimicrobial action minimizes the development of resistant organisms.

Kaolin is a layered silicate mineral. Kaolin is used in ceramics, medicine, coated paper, as a food additive, in toothpaste, as a light diffusing material in white incandescent light bulbs, and in cosmetics. Until the early 1990s it was the active substance of anti-diarrhoea medicine Kaopectate.

Kaolin is an adsorptive agent.

Pectin is a heteropolysaccharide commercially derived from the cell wall of higher plants. It is composed of partially methylated polygalacturonic acid units linked in the positions 1-4. The carboxylic group of the constituents of pectin can exist in the form of esters, free acids, ammonium, potassium or sodium salts or as acid amides. Under the FDA regulation, pectin qualifies as a GRAS (generally recognized as safe) food substance. This status allows pectin to be used with no limitations.

Pectin increases viscosity and volume of stools which helps it to be used for constipation and diarrhea. It is reported as well to present lowering effects of different body components. This effect depends on the type of pectin which indicated that this effect is related to the composition of the correspondent pectin. Nonetheless, this data is still unclear and more studies need to be performed to conclude this effect of pectin.

Uses

Furazolidone is a drug for the treatment of infectious diarrhea.

For the specific and symptomatic treatment of bacterial or protozoal diarrhea and enteritis caused by susceptible organisms.

Kaolin is a natural ingredient used for the short-term symptomatic treatment of various conditions including diarrhea, skin dryness, and minor skin bleeding.

Used for upset stomach and diarrhea, a traditional medicine used in China, South America and Africa. Kaolin is also used to treat AIDs-related diarrhea. Kaolin based bandages are also under investigation.

Pectin is used in food as a gelling agent and stabilizer. As a medical drug, it has obtained a great interest in its potential use as a source of dietary fiber, lipid, cholesterol, serum glucose and insulin level lowering effect, gastric emptying delay. Some recent studies have researched the possibility of using pectin for the formation of nanoparticles as a delivery vehicle of drugs.

Metidal-m is also used to associated treatment for these conditions: Dysentery, Infectious diarrheaDiaper Rash, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Enteritis infectious, Gastric Ulcer, Loose bowel movements, Stomach pains caused by Gastric AcidBacterial diarrhoea, Diarrhea caused by Salmonella, Diarrhea caused by Shigella, Diarrhea caused by Staphylococcus, Escherichia Coli Diarrhea, Sore Throat, Mouth soreness

How Metidal-m works

Furazolidone and its related free radical products are believed to bind DNA and induce cross-links. Bacterial DNA is particularly susceptible to this drug leading to high levels of mutations (transitions and transversions) in the bacterial chromosome.

Kaolin adsorbs water, toxins and bacteria, contributing to firmer stools, reducing fluid loss from diarrhea.

Pectin is an adsorbent that binds to bacteria, toxins and other irritants in the intestinal mucosa. Pectin is able to decrease the pH in the intestinal lumen and provides a soothing effect on the irritated mucosa.

Toxicity

Reactions to Furoxone have been reported including a fall in blood pressure, urticaria, fever, arthralgia, and a vesicular morbilliform rash. Other adverse effects can include a brown discoloration of the urine; hemolysis can occur in G6PDH-deficient patients. The drug has a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory effect and should never be given concurrently to individuals already taking MAO inhibitors.

Pectin is a substance determined to be safe.

Pectin is not absorbed and it is not distributed in the body.

Half Life

10 minutes

Pharmacokinetic studies have not been performed as pectin is not absorbed.

Clearance

Pharmacokinetic studies have not been performed as pectin is not absorbed.

Elimination Route

Pectin is completely excreted in the feces, including a small amount of trigalacturonic acid that can be found in the colon.
