Otostan is an antiparasitic that is toxic to the scabies mite. Otostan also relieves itching by producing what is called a counter-irritation. As crotamiton evaporates from the skin, it produces a cooling effect. This cooling effect helps to divert your body's attention away from the itching.

Uses
Otostan lotion is used for the treatment of itching and skin irritation caused by, for example sunburn, dry eczema, itchy dermatitis, allergic rashes, hives, nettle rash, chickenpox, insect bites and stings, heat rashes and personal itching. Otostan lotion is also used for the treatment of pruritus after scabies.

How Otostan works

Dosage
Otostan dosage
Pruritus: Adults (including the elderly) and children: Apply to the affected area 2-3 times daily.Otostan lotion will provide relief from irritation for 6-10 hours after each application. Otostan lotioncan be used in children. There are no special dosage recommendations in the elderly.
Pruritus after scabies: Adults (including the elderly): After the patient has taken a warm bath, theskin should be well dried and Otostan lotion rubbed into the entire body surface (excluding theface and scalp) until no traces of the preparation remain visible on the surface. The applicationshould be repeated once daily, preferably in the evening, for a total of 3-5 days. Depending onthe response, special attention should be paid to sites that are particularly susceptibly toinfestation by the mites (eg interdigital spaces, wrists, axillae and genitalia). Areas where there ispus formation should be covered with a dressing impregnated with Otostan lotion. While thetreatment is in progress the patient may take a bath shortly before the next application. Aftercompletion of the treatment, a cleansing bath should be taken followed by a change of bed linenand underclothing.
Pruritus after scabies: Children: Application as described for adults but in children under 3 years of age Otostan lotionshould not be applied more than once a day
Side Effects
Occasionally irritation of the skin or contact allergy may occur. In such cases the preparation should be discontinued.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding use
Pregnancy Category C. There is no experience to judge the safety of Otostan lotion in pregnancy, therefore Otostan lotion is not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first three months. It is not known whether the active substance passes into breast milk. Nursing mothers should avoid applying Otostan lotion in the area of the nipples.
Contraindication
Acute exudative dermatoses. Otostan 10% lotion is contra-indicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to crotamiton. Otostan 10% lotion should not be used in or around the eyes since contact with the eyelids may give rise to conjunctival inflammation.
Special Warning
Children: Application as described for adults but in children under 3 years of age Cronix lotion should not be applied more than once a day.
Acute Overdose
No information is available on overdosage following topical application. Oral ingestion of the drug may cause burning sensation of the mouth, irritation of the buccal, esophageal, and gastric mucosa, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. No known specific antidote. Empty stomach by emesis or gastric lavage followed by symptomatic treatment.
