Retiblue Opth is a selective tissue staining agent (dye) which stains anterior lens capsule of the human crystalline lens. The dye does not penetrate the capsule, permitting visualization of the anterior capsule in contrast to the non-stained lens cortex and inner lens material.

Uses

Retiblue Opth is used for use as an aid in ophthalmic surgery by staining the anterior capsule of the lens.

Dosage

Retiblue Opth dosage

The first step to administer Retiblue Opth is to inject an air bubble into the anterior chamber using a 26 gauge needle. It prevents dilution of dye by the aqueous humor. Then Retiblue Opth is injected into the anterior lens capsule using a tuberculin syringe. Sufficient staining is achieved as soon as the dye has contracted the capsule. If some area is left unstained, inject one more drop till it gets stained.

Side Effects

  • Discoloration of high water content hydrogen intraocular lenses.
  • Inadvertent staining of the posterior lens capsule and vitreous face.
  • It is generally self limited, lasting up to one week.

Precaution

It is recommended that after injection all excess Retiblue Opth should be immediately removed from the eye by thorough irrigation of the anterior chamber.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding use

Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Retiblue Opth should be given to a pregnant woman only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Lactation: It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when Retiblue Opth is administered to a nursing woman.

Contraindication

Retiblue Opth is contraindicated when a non-hydrated (dry state), hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) is planned to be inserted into the eye because the dye may be absorbed by the IOL and stain the IOL.

Special Warning

Pediatric use: The safety and effectiveness of Retiblue Opth have been established in pediatric patients. Use of Retiblue Opth is supported by evidence from an adequate and well controlled study in pediatric patients.

Geriatric use: No overall differences in safety and effectiveness have been observed between elderly and younger patients.
