Soframycin Eye is an aminoglyoside antibiotic which is the major component of neomycin. Susceptible organisms include many gram-negative bacteria (but not Pseudomonas) and many strains of Staphylococcus. Used topically in the treatment of skin, eye and ear infections often in combination with steroids and other antimicrobials.

Soframycin Eye is used for the treatment of bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis. Soframycin Eye is an antibiotic. It is not active against fungi, viruses and most kinds of anaerobic bacteria. Soframycin Eye works by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of t-RNA, leaving the bacterium unable to synthesize proteins vital to its growth. Soframycin Eye is useful primarily in infections involving aerobic bacteria bacteria.

How Soframycin Eye works

Soframycin Eye binds to specific 30S-subunit proteins and 16S rRNA, four nucleotides of 16S rRNA and a single amino acid of protein S12. This interferes with decoding site in the vicinity of nucleotide 1400 in 16S rRNA of 30S subunit. This region interacts with the wobble base in the anticodon of tRNA. This leads to interference with the initiation complex, misreading of mRNA so incorrect amino acids are inserted into the polypeptide leading to nonfunctional or toxic peptides and the breakup of polysomes into nonfunctional monosomes.

Ophthalmic-

Conjunctivitis, blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis: As 0.5% ointment. Apply 2-3 times daily into the affected eyes.Otic/Aural-

Posttraumatic or pre- and postoperative otitis externa: As 0.5% drops: Use as directed.Topical/Cutaneous-

Skin infections: As sulfate: Apply 1% dressing onto affected area.

Side Effects

Ototoxicity, if large areas used in high-risk groups; sensitisation, contact dermatitis, local irritation and itching.

Precaution

If large areas of skin are being treated, ototoxicity may be a hazard, particularly in children, elderly and those with renal impairment. Pregnancy.

Interaction

Co-admin of gramicidin with framycetin reduces the risk of selecting resistant bacteria.
