It is an acquired, chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune, poly/multisystemic disorder that affects muscles throughout the body. It belongs to the family of diseases known as idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

The cause of polymyositis is unknown but is believed to be related to an autoimmune process. It usually begins in adulthood and affects men and women equally.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Polymyositis

Polymyositis is usually diagnosed with blood tests, imaging tests such as MRI and CT scans, muscle biopsy, and electromyography (EMG). The treatment of polymyositis typically includes a combination of medications (such as corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs) and physical therapy. Other treatments may include the use of splints, braces, or for severe cases, surgery.

Managing Polymyositis

The primary goals in managing polymyositis are to reduce inflammation, improve muscle strength, and prevent complications. It is important to talk to your doctor about the best treatment plan for you. It is important to remember that polymyositis is a long-term condition and there is no cure. However, with proper management, it is possible to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
